In response to the devastation in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina, the Church of the Brethren has teamed up with six other denominations and three ecumenical organizations (Bishop for Louisiana and Mississippi African Methodist Episcopal Church, American Friends Service Committee, Baptist Peace Fellowship of North America, Church of the Brethren, Every Church a Peace Church, Mennonite Church USA, National Council of Churches, Presbyterian Church-USA and the Progressive National Baptist Convention) in a partnership with the National Council of Churches called Churches Supporting Churches (CSC) to help 36 congregations in 12 predominately African-American neighborhoods that have been destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.
The mission of CSC is to “Restart, Reopen, and Repair or Rebuild the Churches in order for them to be agents for Community Development and to Recreate their Community.” The Church of the Brethren’s dedication to peacemaking and service makes CSC a wonderful opportunity for individuals and congregations to put their faith into action.
