National Youth Christian Citizenship Seminar
March 29 April 3, 2008
New York City and Washington D.C.
Topic: Genocide, focusing on the Darfur region of Sudan
But I say to you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.
-- Matthew 5:44
Matthew 5 has long been a guiding scripture for members of the Church of the Brethren. It has also been a challenging text as we strive to live out this call for nonviolence. When Jesus implores us to “love our enemy” (vs. 44), what then do we say to those who are being killed and starved at the hands of their enemy in places such as Sudan? Does “turning the other cheek” and “praying for those who persecute you” really make sense in the face of an active, violent genocide?
Can such genocide be addressed from our understanding of scripture and our history as a church in any meaningful way? Can real nonviolence work when governments and the powers of military strength stand against such an understanding?
This year’s Christian Citizenship Seminar is being planned to help us understand and explore more the relationship between our faith and our response to the violence of genocide in our world. Be prepared to learn and to grow and to be challenged in your responsibility as a faith filled citizen.
Cost: $350, with a $100 deposit is due upon registration. The remaining $250 is due by February 28, 2008
